James A. Wood, 88 of Rich Creek, passed away Friday, July 25th, 2014 after a brief illness.
He was born in Slab Fork, West Virginia on August 20th, 1925, and was the son of the late Merida Richard and Nada Webb Wood. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his son, James Melvin Wood; and his sister, Margaret Rose Wood Davis.
He was a retired employee of the Radford Arsenal, and was active for many years in the Masonic lodge and the Shriners organization. He also served in the U.S. Air Force, having been stationed in the Middle East. He loved being out of doors and faithfully maintained a large garden.
He is survived by his wife of nearly 62 years, Barbara Ruth Ferguson Wood; three daughters, Beverly of South Carolina, Nada and husband John Wright of Richmond, and Lisa of Roanoke; and one son, Kevin and wife Shirley Wood of Richmond; nine grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
The family wishes to thank the nursing staff of Carilion Giles Community Hospital for their incredible kindness and care.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, July 31st, 2014 at 11 AM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows. Burial will follow in Sunrise Memorial Gardens in Rich Creek. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Chapel Wednesday from 6 to 7:30PM, with a Masonic memorial service to be held at 7:30 PM.
