Claude Eugene Taylor, 78 of Narrows passed away Monday, December 2nd, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, surrounded by his family and friends.
He was born in Mitchell County, North Carolina on October 22nd, 1935, and was the son of the late Stokes Taylor and Lucy Garland Taylor. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by his wife of nearly 50 years, Betty Myrtle Marcus Taylor; a granddaughter, Carrie Elizabeth Kinder; and a brother, Lt. Col. Ernie VanHuss.
At 17, Claude enlisted in the United States Marine Corps, and proudly served three combat tours during the Vietnam War, and retired after 20 years of service and was a faithful Marine even after retirement. He was retired employee of Celanese Acetate in Narrows with 25 years of service. An avid outdoorsman, Claude enjoyed hunting, fishing and trapping. He was a longtime member of Williams Chapel Church of Christ in the Wolf Creek Community in Bland County. A devoted and faithful family man, Claude will be dearly missed by his loved ones and many friends.
Left to cherish his memory are a son, Tommy Taylor and wife Mary Ann of Narrows; a daughter, Tammy Taylor Ahern and husband Bill of Belspring, Virginia; five grandchildren, Christen Porterfield, Jacob Taylor, Brooke Taylor, Gabrielle Kinder, and Becky Taylor; several nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends, including a very faithful friend, Richard Lambert of Christiansburg.
Funeral services will be held Monday, December 9th, 2013 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows with Harold Goins, Minister, officiating. Burial will follow in Angels Rest Cemetery with graveside rites conducted by VFW Post #6000 of Narrows, American Legion Posts #68 of Narrows, #311 of Pembroke, and #145 of Peterstown. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service Saturday from 6 to 8 PM.
