Charlie Lewis "Teach" Monk, 71 of Narrows departed this life on Friday, November 1st, 2013 at Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital.
He was born on January 24th, 1942, and was the son of the late Carson Everett and Bertha Sykes Monk. In addition to his mother and father, he was preceded in death by a sister, Phyllis Monk Cloninger.
A 1960 graduate of Narrows High School, he attended Hiwassee College in Tennessee, where he received an Associate of Arts Degree in 1962. He received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Lincoln Memorial University in 1965. He began his teaching career in Tazewell and came to Narrows Elementary/Middle School. Between both schools, Charlie taught for 31 years before his retirement. He loved the game of pool, and was an avid reader and enjoyed spending time at the beach. Charlie was also a member of Pearisburg Moose Lodge #1338. A loving son, husband, brother and friend, he will be dearly missed by his family and many special friends, including the students whose lives he as influenced.
Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife, Frances Orey Monk; three stepchildren, David Earl McDaniel and Richard McDaniel, both of Narrows, and Drema McDaniel Mosser (Bill) of Prosperity, South Carolina; three step-grandchildren, Nathan Thornton, Lindsay Dowdy, and Fleet McDaniel; three step-great grandchildren; a brother-in-law, a niece and nephew, and several cousins.
Funeral services will be held Monday, November 4th, 2013 at 2 PM in the Chapel of Riffe's Funeral Service in Narrows. Burial will follow in Fairview Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Riffe's Funeral Service Sunday from 6 to 8 PM. The family requests that those sending memorial contributions, please consider East Chapel Community Church.
