Geneva (Jean) Mullins Obituary

Geneva Hale Mullins, known as Jean to her friends and Meemaw to her grandchildren, was born July 20, 1925, the daughter of the late James Ira and Electa Compton Hale.  She died May 21, 2019 after a brief illness surrounded by family and friends.  In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Paul J. Mullins, and four brothers, Carl, Curtis, Lowell and Logan Hale and one sister, Virginia Hale.  She is survived by her sons Phillip (Joalyn) and Johnny (Penny) Mullins and grandchildren Stacy (Lee) Holder, Matthew (Joanna) Mullins, Eric (Courtney) Mullins, and Catherine (Adam) Olejarczyk.  Also surviving her are seven great grandchildren, Wesley, Erin, Haven, Jacob, Bennett, Leighton, and Dalton, her sister Ilene Wolfe, her brother Harold Hale, god children Rick and David Kingrea, Kay Barnhill, her special lifelong friend Margaret Kingrea and numerous nieces and nephews.  Jean was born in Buchanan County and grew up on a mountain farm at the foot of Big A Mountain.  She moved to Giles County in 1945 where she met and married the love of her life, Paul Mullins.  They shared a wonderful life together in Narrows where Jean remained a lifelong resident until her death.  She was involved with many social and civic organizations throughout her long fulfilling life.  Jean was a caring, compassionate person, and a good listener with a great sense of humor.  It is no surprise at age 93 she had lots of friends of all ages.  She was a mentor, counselor, and confidant to many friends and family, especially her grandchildren who often sought her advice and guidance knowing it would be forthcoming without criticism.  She was an avid and an excellent golfer until age 81 and a winner of multiple tournaments.  She loved the game and was a keen competitor but mostly she loved just being with her friends who loved the same game.  She was also an avid bridge player and she played regularly until her death.  She was married in the First Methodist Church of Narrows in 1945 and remained a lifelong member serving in many capacities.  She was still singing in the choir into her nineties.  Jean impacted the lives of many friends and family in so many positive ways.  She will be missed by all that knew and loved her.  A celebration of Life will be held Sunday, May 26, 2019 at 2:30pm at the Narrows First United Methodist Church with the Rev. Doug Armstrong officiating with burial following in the Birchlawn Burial Park in Pearisburg.  The family will receive friends at the Riffe – Givens Funeral Home Saturday evening 6 – 8 pm.  In lieu of flowers, please make a contribution to the First United Methodist Church in Narrows, P.O.B. 398, Narrows, VA. 24124.  The family is being served by Riffe - Givens Funeral Service in Narrows, (540) 726-2442, and online at riffefuneralservice.com.
